Cleaning and Protecting Denver Porcelain Tile

October 12, 2016

Denver porcelain tile is a popular choice for many homeowners because of its durability, versatility and variety. But, like any other flooring material, porcelain tiles have to be regularly cleaned and protected. Luckily, porcelain is low maintenance compared to other floors, so you don’t have to devote a lot of time to cleaning your floors. Follow these tips to keep your tiles bright and beautiful:

Clean up spills.

It’s important to wipe up spills on your porcelain tile as soon as they occur to protect the floor from damage. Although the actual porcelain is fairly resistant to staining, the grout that binds the tile pieces together is not, so it’s imperative that you do not allow liquids to sit for long periods of time on the floor. If spills do occur, learn more about cleaning grout.

Sweep regularly.

Even if you don’t see any dust bunnies hopping around on your Denver porcelain tile, it’s important to sweep or vacuum at least once a week. If you choose to sweep, make sure it is a soft bristled broom so you don’t scratch the tiles. When dust and dirt settles into the tile over time, it can dull its beautiful shine. Even the tiniest piece of dirt or debris can scratch flooring, so remove loose dirt and dust as often as possible to protect your floors from harm.

Mop the floors.

When it’s time to mop the floors, mix a solution of ¼ cup white vinegar and two gallons of water. Make sure the mop you are using is non-abrasive and safe for use on a porcelain floor. It’s best if you mop your Denver porcelain tile every other week, as long as you sweep or vacuum in between.

Choose the right solution.

Did your kids or pets just drag in mud from outside? If you have to spot clean your porcelain tile floors, make sure you are using a cleaning solution designed for this flooring material. A lot of household cleaners are so harsh that they will harm the sealant placed over your porcelain tile, leaving your floor exposed to more harm. If you can’t find a cleaning solution made specifically for porcelain tile, choose one that is not acidic or alkaline. The cleaner you use should not contain any bleach, ammonia, or abrasives that could damage your floor.

Once you find the right solution, spray it on the stain and try to remove it with a soft cloth. If the stain has already set into the floor, use a soft nylon brush to gently remove the stain before you spray the cleaner.
