Water Feature Ideas to Incorporate Into Your Landscape Design

There is nothing like a water feature to up your landscape design game. Whether you decide on a koi pond, a fountain, or a waterfall, having a water feature in your yard is great to look at—and it can actually help you relax.

Water Features for Your Landscape

Here are some ideas for adding a water feature to your landscape design.
  • Swimming pool. A swimming pool is surely the original water feature as these have been around for decades. Adding a pool or a hot tub to your backyard isn’t just beautiful to look at, but it can provide a lot of fun for family and friends. In some areas, pools and hot tubs can even increase your property value. Pools are easy to integrate into other landscaping details, such as waterfalls and fountains.
  • Ponds. You don’t need to have a ton of space to add a pond to your landscape design. If you have the space and the resources, consider creating a tranquil koi pond. Make sure the pond is big enough for the koi fish to swim and grow comfortable. It’s important to include nontoxic greenery in your pond, such as water lilies and other floating plants, as this is how the fish feed.
  • Streams. If your yard is on the smaller side and a pond won’t fit, you can design a shallow, more controlled water feature that runs along your yard. You can even add a small waterfall between different levels to add some texture to the stream.
  • Waterfall. A waterfall in your backyard pond, pool, or stream is an excellent way to add movement to your landscape. You can use a variety of materials to create a path for the water, such as rocks and concrete. Plant flowers, succulents, and grasses nearby to add color. The sound of the water flowing is a great way to mask traffic and other noise and is quite conducive to relaxation! If space is limited, pondless waterfalls are ideal for small areas. Instead of water collecting at the bottom, pumps are put in to circulate water back up through the fountain, which creates the waterfall effect in just a fraction of the space. These types of waterfalls are also low maintenance.
  • Firepit water feature. If you’ve already got a fire pit, adding a water feature nearby creates a great spot for entertaining in your backyard.
  • Splash pad. If you’ve got kids who love to run through the sprinkler, you can create a splash pad for the backyard for a more decorative way for your kids to have fun. Because they have no standing water, splash pads are safer than traditional swimming poos, which is a real plus for families with very young children.
